As social workers, we will be dealing with all kinds of people. the Trayvons and the Georges. This article helped me to remember that we must examine the social implications from both sides.
The shooting was horrific and terrible and George Zimmerman does deserve to be tried for his crime, but we must also be aware that George is a person. He is not just the white (hispanic) 28 year old that shot a black 17 year old. He is responsible, but he is also George. And we don't know exactly what was going on in his head. Or what has happened to him in the past, or what happened as he got out of his car. We don't know. There are many questions unanswered.
Is he crying because of the media backlash? in remorse? in fear?
He did something terrible. He deserves to be held accountable. But he is a person, too.
